In music, a series of partial vibrations that
combine to form a musical tone. The number
and relative prominence of harmonics produced
determines an instrument's tone colour
(timbre). An oboe is rich in harmonics, the
flute has few. Harmonics conform to
successive divisions of the sounding air
column or string: their pitches are
harmonious.
